As lockdowns restrictions difficult people’s ability to exercise outside many people are finding new ways to be fit at home. And a man in Belgium has reached another level.
Yves Hanoulle, a 48-year-old IT coach, told reporters that he used his period working from home to main his shape and health. He has walked over 930 miles since restrictions started in Belgium in March. Using his treadmill desk, clocks 12.5 miles or more per day, he said.
“I read … that sitting is the new smoking and that we humans are not really made for sitting all the time,” said Hanoulle. “And so when I started doing this I immediately noticed in myself that I feel a lot more fitter and that it’s much easier to focus.”
Belgium is lifting is restrictions slowly as the benefits of the lockdown have started to appear.
New research by electronics company Withings showed that people across the world are not gaining as much weight as they may have feared. In the U.S., about 37 percent of people had gained more than half a kilo, but the average weight gain was only one hundred grams. Those trends were replicated in countries across the globe. The largest average weight gain, almost one kilo, was seen in China.
However, the study also showed that people were taking 12 percent fewer steps in lockdown, though the number grew in China, France, Italy and Spain.
